| I talked to someone on the street yesterday about Scientology |
| 02.27.07 (12:26 pm) [edit] |
Yesterday, I was talking to a complete stranger about the fact that I was a Scientologist. He was sincerely interested and I started explaining some basic concepts of things I knew would help him if he understood their mechanics. I find myself interested in sharing things I know will help someone else. And I'm always amazed there are people who have heard about Scientology though don't really know very much about it or what they've heard is a weird interpretation from someone who really didn't understand it themselves. Usually I tell people that they should read a book like The Fundamentals of Thought by L. Ron Hubbard. This is not particularly to try to sell a book, and I frequently recommend just checking out a library book, it's because I know that there's a certain danger in explaining to people such fundamental data about life when you don't have the actual source material to hand. Obviously you have varying degrees of literacy and varying degrees of understanding and even people who are considered "literate" do not always totally understand what their reading and or be able to accurately relay this information to someone else. It opens the door to a certain degree of interpretation of false information being spread. I wouldn't even say I trust myself to get into a long explanation about what Scientology is without just having someone read a book written by L. Ron Hubbard.
Anyway, I suggested to this individual that he should really read a book or go to the Scientology web site to check it out for himself. At the same time I was in the position that I had some time on my hands (I was waiting for a friend) and I was curious to see his reaction if I went a little further and explained some basic concepts to him.
He told me he was a manager at a local restaurant and so I knew he most likely had to deal with people regularly. I asked him if he ever had trouble with co-workers getting along with each other or getting into arguments, etc. He said yes of course and so I explained something called the Third Part Law. Luckily it's one of those basic things which I've memorized and basically it goes like this: A THIRD PARTY MUST BE PRESENT AND UNKNOWN IN EVERY QUARREL FOR A CONFLICT TO EXIST. or FOR A QUARREL TO OCCUR, AN UNKNOWN THIRD PARTY MUST BE ACTIVE IN PRODUCING IT BETWEEN TWO POTENTIAL OPPONENTS. or WHILE IT IS COMMONLY BELIEVED TO TAKE TWO TO MAKE A FIGHT, A THIRD PARTY MUST EXIST AND MUST DEVELOP IT FOR ACTUAL CONFLICT TO OCCUR. I went on to explain how it seems like it's visibly two people or groups in conflict, however, there's an actual instigator of this conflict, behind the scenes and unnoticed and unsuspected who's actively promoting the conflict and probably has something to gain from the conflict. And there's an actual method of first detecting who the third party is and then easily resolving whatever conflict existed. And that this could apply to "personal" quarrels, group conflicts, warring governments, etc.
I also explained the basic concept of the ARC (pronounced A-R-C) triangle, and that there are three factors affinity, reality and communication which make up the corners of this triangle. And how these three points are intimately related. I gave him a theoretical example by asking him how his relationship was with people whom he didn't know very much about and or pass by him on the street or people in the supermarket, etc. And how this compares to if all of a sudden you both shared a common interest, maybe you both loved classic cars from the 50's or maybe you both were planting gardens in your front lawn. Anyway, without knowing anything else from the guy, this would be an increase in reality between you, which in turn would increase you affinity for the individual and level of communication, thus resulting in you understanding the individual better. And so the points of the ARC triangle work this way. As one point of the triangle increases so do the other two resulting in greater understanding.
Anyway, at this point our conversation was cut short as the friend I was waiting for arrived but I smiled and told him I had to go and he seemed genuinely appreciative that I took the time to share these basic rules about life. And I, at the same time, felt I somehow enhanced this persons awareness of his environment and hopefully he would get interested enough in actually reading a book himself and finding out more about Scientology.
